Can't view your BreedeNet Invoice?

BreedeNet Invoices & Statements are now being emailed in Adobe PDF Format.

If you are unable to view the documents, please download the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Go to : http://get.adobe.com/reader/ and click on the download button.

Why is my usage too high?

Each user is responsible to monitor their usage. BreedeNet do not have records of what users do online and which websites they visit.

The common reason for high usage is:

  • Virus (usually indicated with high uploads)
  • Downloading movies & music
  • Watching YouTube videos
  • Streaming Videos and Music
  • Using Skype and in particular Video Skyping.
  • Facebook: Facebook in itself doesn't use a lot of data. What does, is if you watch a lot of photos and view videos.
  • Viewing Graphic Intensive Websites
  • Playing online games
  • Listening to Radio online
  • Virus updates
  • Windows updates
  • Downloading programs
Please note that each megabyte you use has a cost to BreedeNet, and therefore we need to charge you for everything you use. The responsibility is on you to keep within your cap or pay the excess bandwidth.

How do I check my Internet Usage?

Go to the Home page of the BreedeNet website.  On the right handside is a section called Internet Usage. Please type in your username and password to view your internet usage.

Can I upgrade my account from home user to business user?

Yes you can. It is free of charge. Please speak to the accounts department.

Can I downgrade my package?

Yes you can. Downgrading is charged at R150.00. Please contact our office.

Please note that you cannot downgrade your package if a 24-month contract has been signed.

What is the Billing period?

Usage is automatically calculated on the last day of the month. Debit orders are deducted on either the 1st, 7th or 15th of each month as per your agreement.

Debit orders that are deducted on the 1st, will only be charged for their monthly contract fee. Additional bandwidth & VOIP charges will be deducted the following month.

Debit orders that are deducted on the 7th & 15th will be charged for their monthly contract fee, additional bandwidth and VOIP charges.

Can we pay by EFT?

We prefer payment by debit order. We do however make exceptions in extreme cases. Please check with the office if you want to pay by EFT.

If payments are made by EFT, it has to be received by the 7th of each month, otherwise your account will be suspended until payment is received.

Topups explained

Topups are a new feature available to BreedeNet Wireless Clients.

Topups are charged at R75 for 1 gigabyte and are valid for 3 month.

I receive a '550 relay not permitted' error message

I receive a '550 relay not permitted' error message; how do I enable SMTP Authentication for my email client?
The same username and password used to retrieve your mail from the mailserver on which your domain is setup at BreedeNet, will apply for outgoing mail authentication.  A typical error when not authenticating successfully with our mailserver is the '550 relay not permitted' error message from within your email client.  It indicates that you are not authenticating to your SMTP server.
In order to enable SMTP authentication, please follow these steps within your email client:

How do I fix the relay error:

Outlook Express:

  1. Go to Outlook Express
  2. Click on Tools on the Menu Bar
  3. Click on Accounts
  4. Double click on email account (usually mail.breede.co.za)
  5. Click on Servers Tab
  6. If outgoing SMTP server is mail.breede.co.za, tick My Server Requires Authentication under the Outgoing Server section
  7. Click on OK
  8. Click on Close
Microsoft Outlook 2003

  5. Double Click on the your email address (usually mail.breede.co.za)
  6. Click on More Settings
  7. Click on Outgoing Server Tab
  8. Tick My Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
  9. Click OK
  10. Click Next
  11. Click Finish
Microsoft Outlook 2007

How to setup email on iPhone/iPad

To setup your @breede.co.za email account (or any other email account hosted by BreedeNet), on your iPhone or Ipad, is a very simple process. Just follow these steps.

Step 1: Select Settings from the home screen

How to setup an automated "Out-of-Office" email reply?

Email auto responders automatically send a customised auto response (that you compose) to any visitor who emails the address configured with an auto responder.
The auto response is set up to work with a configured pop email account.  The sender receives your automated response and you receive the original enquiry.
Setting up a auto responder:
  • Login to your webmail account (https://myaccount.hetzner.co.za/). Login with your email address and password
  • Click on Mailbox Admin
  • Click on Autoreply under the action column
  • Choose YES to enable
  • Type in your subject and message body
  • Click submit

Why does BreedeNet use 'SMTP Authentication'?

Preventing abuse within a private or homogeneous network where everyone uses the same software is relatively easy.  But like most ISPs, we must provide services to people using a wide variety of software over which we have little or no control.  Therefore, we had to choose the compromise solution which will work best for most of our users, and pose the least inconvenience.
After examining all of the alternatives, and with 'identity theft' on the increase, BreedeNet chose to use SMTP Authentication to authenticate users.
Will this reduce the spam that I receive in my mailbox?
Unfortunately, it will not.  This measure only prevents non-BreedeNet users from impersonating you or sending spam through our servers.  This helps to improve your security and also reduces spam for everyone, thereby ensuring that BreedeNet's servers will not be abused.

How do I access WebMail?

All BreedeNet clients are able to use WebMail to read their email on any internet-connected computer around the world.  Please note that the steps below are only for mailboxes hosted with BreedeNet.
Should you wish to read the email for an email alias (an address that forwards all email it receives to another email account), log into the destination mailbox to which mail is being forwarded.
Using WebMail:
Access your konsoleH control panel at http://myaccount.hetzner.co.za
Log in using your full email address and its case-sensitive password
Remember that you always have the option of using WebMail if you want to check your email and are not at your computer but do have access to the Internet.  Even if you set up a programme like Outlook to access your email, you can still use WebMail too.

What should the smtp server be?

BreedeNet usages the following SMTP server:

  • 192.168.20.4
  • smtp.saix.net
  • mail.breede.co.za (server needs to be authenticated)

What is an alias?

An email alias is not a real email account.  Instead, it's an address that forwards all email it receives to another email account.
For example:
If you establish an email alias called This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to go to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , then all email sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it will be automatically forwarded to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it (in this scenario, 'info' is called an alias of 'joesoap').
You can also set up an email alias to forward to an account outside of your domain name.
For example:
You can set up This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to go to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
You can also set up an email alias to forward to multiple usernames or another alias.
This way you can have a number of email addresses to fit your needs with only a handful of actual email accounts.

SPAM & Missing Emails?

nospamNo one likes receiving SPAM, those annoying email selling suspicious products or trying to trick you in revealing your bank details. At BreedeNet we have SPAM filters that block these email messages, but occasionally they slip through or important email messages are seen as SPAM.

Luckily the important email messages that have been marked as SPAM have not disappeared; they are simply kept online in your email’s online spambucket and can easily be retrieved.

It’s a good idea to check your spambucket a few times a week to make sure you don’t miss any emails.

To view your email’s online spam bucket:

How do I change/reset my email password?

Please contact the BreedeNet office at 023 3422221

What is 'SMTP Authentication' and how does it work?

SMTP Authentication is the mechanism by which the clients of an ISP identify themselves to the mail server through which they intend to send email. It is not possible for any person to send email via any mail server they choose; mail servers will only allow the sending of email by legitimate users.
How it works:
Upon sending an email, the user's mail client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc) will identify itself to the mail server by supplying the username and associated password of the email account. Should these credentials be valid, the user's mail is accepted and will be processed and relayed to its recipient destination. If the authentication fails, an appropriate error message is generated by the user's mail client.
View the Email setup guides section for detailed guides with visuals on how to setup or edit your email account using a specific email client software, for example Outlook.

General Enquiries

What happens when I reach my cap?

When you sign up with BreedeNet, you have the choice of what happens when you reach your cap.

Option 1: Temporary suspension of Internet

BreedeNet will temporary suspend your internet account when you have reached your cap. Your Internet can be reinstated by phoning the office and arranging a topup. A topup will be charged at R75.00 per 1gig. This topup will last a maximum of 3 months, or until the topup cap has been reached.

Option 2: Normal Operation

No interruption to internet or speed, but all out of bundle bandwidth will be charged at R0.10 per megabyte.

Do you offer uncapped internet?

Yes We offer a 384kbps fully uncapped connection for R299 per month.

Currently not available in the Nokwi region.

Can I download torrents and use P2P programs?

Although BreedeNet does not endorse the downloading of torrents and using peer to peer programs, we do allow it after hours through a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection. Please contact the office to setup a VPN connection to use for torrents.

P2P (Peer 2 Peer) is a type of program that connects to thousands of other users. You can download files from these users' computers but they in turn also download files from your computer. This slows down your internet connection and also our network because it generates a lot of traffic and uses your precious bandwidth. Some of these programs are also responsible for spreading spyware, adware, malware and viruses.

Is Wireless better than ADSL?

There are many advantages to Wireless Internet over ADSL, but one cannot say the one is better than the other one. It is the best to weigh up the pro’s and con's, and decide for yourself.

Advantages to Wireless:

  • BreedeNet provides up to 4mbps Internet at a cheaper price than equivalent ADSL.
  • ADSL frequently experiences problems.  With Wireless Internet, we can bypass the problems and ensure more uptime than with ADSL.
  • BreedeNet has full control over equipment on the network, and can quickly assess problems on the network and at each customer’s CPE.
  • BreedeNet can also provide faster onsite support than with ADSL.

What is the speed of Wireless Internet?

We offer the same speed to all our clients running at a maximum of 4mbps (4000kbps). Since the speed of internet is determined by the type of website, congestion on the internet, international vs local website etc, we cannot guarantee the speed.

Most ADSL packages only give you a speed of 384kbps. Higher ADSL speed is available, but then the line rental increases to as much as R500 per month.

What is Wireless Internet?

Fixed Wireless Internet uses wireless technology to transmit broadband internet to customers. Each customer has a CPE (Customer Premises Unit) on its roof which receives the internet transmission from the Wireless Internet high sites on the mountains.

The CPE needs to have clear line of sight to one of the high sites to ensure good signal strength.

Can I connect more than one computer onto the internet?

Yes you can, however you would need extra equipment such as a wireless router or a switch.

Can I travel with my Wireless Internet?

This type of Wireless Internet is fixed, therefore you cannot travel with it.

When I get BreedeNet Wireless, is my whole house/business wireless?

The answer is no. BreedeNet offers fixed wireless internet, which relays internet to a fixed point at your premises.

However, if your premises need to be completely wireless, there willl be several options.  These will be charged extra for, and is not included in the initial installation fee.  For a customized quote please contact your agent.

What is the difference between the home packages and business packages

Both packages enjoy the same internet speeds, however the major difference is in support and value added products.

Business packages have the advantage of priority support as we recognise that businesses today need to have constant connectivity to function. The business package users receive a free domain and free webhosting.

What is included in the installation fee?

The installation fee includes the following:

  • CPE (customer premises equipment) - The device that receives the internet signals. This is mounted on the roof of your building.
  • The necessary cable & connectors from the CPE to the closest computer.
  • Labour - the installation usually takes 2 hours, depending on the location of the computers and the CPE.
All extra requirements and equipment, such as wireless routers, switches etc. cost extra.

Can I roam or travel with my Wireless Internet?

We only do fixed wireless internet which does not allow you to travel with it.

However, your username and password can be used to log in at any of the BreedeNet Hotspots in our area.

What is my mailbox size?

We normally allow mailbox sizes to grew to a maximum of 50 megabytes. If you require additional space there are alternatives. Contact the office to discuss these alternatives.

The size of this mailbox is therefore not a good solution to only use it as a webmail account.

Voice Services

How much bandwidth does VOIP use?

VOIP calls use bandwith, but since the BreedeNet service uses the G729a codec (fancy words to say the voice is encoded to make the bandwidth usage smaller), the cost per calls is only about 1-2 cents per minute extra. A VOIP call uses 6 kilobytes per second (3kb/s upload, 3kb/s download). Thus, allowing for 10mb of idle time, one can phone 2800 minutes on 1 gigabyte.

HOWEVER, we have decided that we will no longer charge for bandwidth used by VOIP. Thus VOIP can be used on all our packages.

Can I keep my telkom number?

As of 18 June 2010, number porting is available. This means that you can keep your Telkom number when switching over to VOIP. The process automatically cancells your Telkom line.

There is a once-off cost of R150 per number that needs to be ported plus an additional R10 per month.

We need a letter stating that you would like to transfer the number from Telkom to Breedenet on an offical letterhead, plus a copy of the first 4 pages of your Telkom Bill.

Process takes 3-5 days.

Can I use my Telkom phone with VOIP?

Yes, but an analogue phone converter is needed, like the Linksys SPA 2102 or the Siemens SX762 WLAN router which has inputs for 2 telkom lines.

How much does a call to a VOIP number cost?

Phoning from BreedeNet VOIP to BreedeNet VOIP is free.

Phoning from a Telkom number to BreedeNet VOIP costs the following:

Standard Time:
Monday
to Friday 07:00 to 19:00
Callmore time: Monday to
Friday 19:00 to 07:00
and Friday 19:00 to
Monday 07:00

Minimum

R 0.57 R 0.61 R 0.57
BreedeNet
(non-geographic locations)
R 0.57 R 0.66 R 0.61

Please note that Telkom Closer Free Minutes does not apply when phoning a VOIP Number.

When does off peak rates start?

Peak times: Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 20:00

All other times are off-peak.

Is VOIP better than Skype?

The answer to this question depends on what Skype is used for. If Skype is only used to phone other Skype users, then Skype is better.

  • Our voice service has free incoming calls & free voicemail (Skype charges for that)
  • Calls to landlines to mobiles in South Africa are cheaper than using Skype
  • Calls to landlines and mobiles in the rest of the world are in most cases cheaper than on Skype
  • Voice quality if better controlled, than with Skype, giving better quality calls
The downside to VOIP is that the software for Skype is free, but for VOIP it is not. You need to buy extra software or a VOIP phone.

Is itemised billing available?

Yes, itemised billing is available at no extra cost. The billling can be viewed at anytime online. There is no delay in showing calls.  Once a call is completed, it will show on the online itemised billing records.

What are the disadvantages of VOIP?

  • The major disadvantage is when the internet is not working, the phone is not working, but the VOIP services has voice mail, even for extensions, just for in case a call is missed
  • VOIP calls use bandwith, but since the BreedeNet service uses the G729a codec (fancy words to say the voice is encoded to make the bandwidth usage smaller), the cost per calls is only about 1-2 cents per minute extra (About 2000 - 3000 minutes can be phoned on 1 gigabyte)
  • VOIP phones are more expensive than normal phones

Can I use a Telkom line with a VOIP Line?

The short answer is yes you can, but it's not as simple as that.

For a small office or home, inexpensive Siemens equipment can be used, but for anything more complex, IP gateways are needed which are more expensive.

At the moment VOIP lines cannot be incorporated in an existing Telkom PBX system. We will be doing that later.

Can I send faxes over a VOIP line?

Not at this stage, but this will be possible with an analogue phone converter in a few months' time.

Can I get geographical numbers?

At this stage only the following geographical number are available:

  • 010 500 xxxx - Johannesburg
  • 012 004 xxxx - Pretoria
  • 013 004 xxxx - Nelspruit / Witbank / Middelburg
  • 016 004 xxxx - Vereeniging / Meyerton
  • 021 300 xxxx - Cape Town
  • 023 004 xxxx - Worcester / Beaufort West
  • 031 100 xxxx - Durban
  • 041 004 xxxx - Port Elizabeth
  • 042 004 xxxx - Uitenhage / Somerset East
  • 043 003 xxxx - East London
  • 044 004 xxxx - George
  • 051 004 xxxx - Bloemfontein

Number porting is now also available, which means you can keep your Telkom number and use it on a VOIP line.

What are the benefits of VOIP?

  • Cost: Calls are cheaper than Telkom and in most cases cheaper than Skype
  • Numbers are not location based and therefore the number doesn't change when you move
  • The service is not Telkom based, thus Telkom cable theft has no bearing on the service
  • The numbers can be used anywhere in the world, subject to a broadband connection
  • VOIP phones plug into your existing computer network and therefore no need for more cables to be laid
  • A single line can take 2 calls simultaneously
  • Real-time itemised billing available online
  • Free call waiting
  • Free Voicemail
  • Free Callerline Identification (CID)

What are criteria for obtaining a geographic number?

If you are going to be using it as your primary phone number (i.e. to make calls from and receive calls to), you need a physical address in the area associated with the number range. If the number is only going to be used as a secondary number (i.e. to receive calls on only), then there are no special requirements. However an added R10 per month will be levied.

What is VOIP?

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) simply put is using the Internet to make phone calls, similar to the familiar Skype.

Wireless Support

Why is my P2P download not working?

We only allow P2P download via VPN and only during after hours and weekends. Please contact the office to help you setup a VPN.

Why are certain websites slower than others?

South Africa is still dependant on Telkom for most of its bandwidth, especially for International traffic. There are also other Internet Service Providers in South Africa that host certain websites. Between them and Telkom there are peering points that can get congested. This can be observed during the end of the month, particularly on banking sites.
If one particular site is slow, try others like www.google.co.za.  If that is fast, it is probably the site your are accessing, or the route to it,  that is slow.

What is a POE?

POE is the abbreviation for Power Over Ethernet. It is a small device that powers the CPE (Customer Premises Unit) on your roof.

We mainly use one of these three POE units:

poe1_thumb poe2_thumb poe3_thumb

If your internet does not work, it is advisable to unplug the POE from the wall socket; then wait 3 minutes before connecting the power again. In 90% of the cases, that restores the Internet connection.

Why is the Internet not working?

If your internet does not work, it is advisable to unplug the POE from the wall socket; then wait 3 minutes before connecting the power again. In 90% of the cases, that restores the Internet connection.

Internet is lost due to unstable electricity. Unfortunately we don't have control over that.
