I receive a '550 relay not permitted' error message; how do I enable SMTP Authentication for my email client?
The same username and password used to retrieve your mail from the mailserver on which your domain is setup at BreedeNet, will apply for outgoing mail authentication. A typical error when not authenticating successfully with our mailserver is the '550 relay not permitted' error message from within your email client. It indicates that you are not authenticating to your SMTP server.
In order to enable SMTP authentication, please follow these steps within your email client:
How do I fix the relay error:
You can either change your SMTP server or enable authentication:
Option 1: Changing your SMTP Server:
Outlook Express:
- Go to Outlook Express
- Click on Tools on the Menu Bar
- Click on Accounts
- Double click on email account (usually mail.breede.co.za)
- Click on Servers Tab
- Change the SMTP server to: 192.168.20.4
- Click on OK
- Click on Close
Microsoft Outlook 2003
- Go to Outlook 2003
- Click on Tools
- Click on Email Accounts
- Choose View or Change Existing Email account and click next
- Double Click on the your email address (usually mail.breede.co.za)
- Under Outgoing Server (SMTP): type in 192.168.20.4
- Click Next
- Click Finish
Microsoft Outlook 2007
- Go to Outlook 2007
- Click on Tools
- Click on Account Settings
- Double Click on the your email address (usually mail.breede.co.za)
- Under Outgoing Server (SMTP): type in 192.168.20.4
- Click Next
- Click Close
You can now click on Send & Receive to make sure it works.
Option 2: Enabling Authentication:
Outlook Express:
- Go to Outlook Express
- Click on Tools on the Menu Bar
- Click on Accounts
- Double click on email account (usually mail.breede.co.za)

- If outgoing SMTP server is mail.breede.co.za, tick My Server Requires Authentication under the Outgoing Server section
- Click on OK
- Click on Close

- Click on Tools
- Click on Email Accounts
