Beesloop Wêreldbeker toe

Deur Wilna Roux

Beesloop en Plaaswedloop program:

  • 06:00 – 06:50 Registrasies vir Plaaswedloop by Oudewagendrift
  • 09:30 Stalletjies open vir kermis by Laerskool Worcester-Oos
  • 09:30  Sokkerkompetisie begin met die Gr.  3’s
  • 10:00 Kleuterkok kompetisie by Laerskool Worcester-Oos
  • 11:15 Storieskip: Skoolsaal

Soos die spreekwoord lui, die Beesloop ain’t over till the fat lady sings. In hierdie geval is haar naam Blommetjie.

Beesloop and Farm Run Programme

  • 06:00 – 06:50 Registration for farm run at Oudewagendrift
  • 07:30 Farm Run at Oudewagendrift (15 km race en 5 km fun run)
  • 09:30 Fair starts at Worcester-Oos Primary School, Sutherland Street
  • 09:30 Soccer competition kicks off with Gr. 3’s.
  • 10:00 Kindergarten Cook Competition at Worcester-Oos Primary School
  • 11:15 Story Ship: School Hall, Worcester-Oos Primary School
  • 12:00 Blommetjie walks onto the rugby field

Beesloop is one of the big events taking place in the Western Cape countryside every year. This year the big date is the 20th of March. It is impossible to describe the Beesloop in one word, because it consists of so many things at once. It is road race, fun walk, fun fair, tractor rides, Kindergarten Cook competition, and Story Ship. 2010 also brings a shot  of the Soccer World Cup to the Beesloop.

The 15 kilometre Beesloop Farm Race and 5 kilometre Fun Run will be held at the farm, Oudewagendrift  in the Overhex valley outside Worcester. It is a refreshing alternative to a standard road race, though it is an official ASA race and endorsed by the Worcester Athletic club. The race starts at 07:30 and the route will take athletes on farm roads between vineyards and orchards, past cows and old farmsteads, dams and through fields.

For the fit there is a 15 kilometre route.  The alternative 5 kilometre fun run gives families the chance to participate. Sixteen athletes of the JAG Foundation will participate in this year’s race.  (www.jagfoundation.co.za)

Athletes are encouraged to enter as World Cup soccer teams. A group might, for example, decide to participate as the Spanish soccer team and will dress accordingly. Pre-entries can be done at www.enteronline.co.za. Late entries will be accepted at Oudewagendrift from 06:00 on the morning of the race.

After the race, make sure to visit the school grounds of the Primary School, Worcester Oos, situated in Sutherland street, Worcester. Not that you would recognize it as school grounds. There will be tents, flags, stalls and games all over the place.

The SASKO Kindergarten Cook competition for children (ages 5 to 8 years) takes place in the school hall. Right after, the Story Ship show will commence. Remember to buy your ticket before the show starts.

Meanwhile, parents and adults may amuse themselves by strolling through the stalls, having tea and cake in the teagarden, buying fruit and vegetables from the farm stall, or sipping a glass of bubbly in the wine garden. Pancakes, pudding, hamburgers and hotdogs will be sold. Make sure to buy your Beesloop ticket at R10 a  piece long before Blommetjie arrives.

After Story Ship the kids are off to the soccer field. Teams have to register beforehand and play against each other in a mini soccer tournament.  They will compete in the colours of their chosen country, with pre-acquaintance and proper referees. The goal shooting competition is open for everyone: do you have what it takes to shoot a goal? Who knows, maybe you were really supposed to have played for Bafana-Bafana?

As the saying goes, the Beesloop ain’t over till the fat lady sings. In this case, her name is Blommetjie. She is big and fat and black and white.  She walks onto the field, slightly flabbergasted.  She sniffs at a tuft of grass, she peeps around and then decides where to make her mark. To the consternation of the crowd, she lifts her tail and poops.

What Blommetjie doesn’t know, is that the whole rugby field is divided in small blocks. Every block represents a sold ticket. Blommetjie’s poop thus have the potential to enrich one person with R10 000.00. Five other ticketholders will each win R1 000.00.

On the 20th of March there is only one thing for you and your family to do: let’s Beesloop in Worcester.
